Crown lengthening is a dental procedure which exposes more of the tooth by reducing the tissue, bone or both, around the tooth. Crown lengthening can also be performed for cosmetic reasons – to sculpt your gum line and achieve a more attractive smile.
This procedure can be necessary when there isn’t the proper amount of tooth above the gum line to place a crown or cap. Typically, this happens when patients have a cracked tooth, or one that is decayed or broken below the gum line.
Crown lengthening is a simple surgical procedure that can be performed in our office using local anesthesia. Sedation can also be used to eliminate dental fear.
A periodontist generally performs a crown lengthening procedure, in which a teeth cleaning treatment will be provided beforehand. Local anesthesia will be provided and cuts will be performed on the gums to pull them away from the teeth. After enough teeth has been exposed, the treated area will be rinsed with sterile salt water and the gums will be re-stitched.
Crown lengthening can be performed on one tooth, or even your entire gum line, depending on your needs and Dr. Pouyan’s recommendations.
